Gilmore visits SWAC area

Monday night found former Virginia Governor Jim Gilmore addressing over 100 people as the guest of the James Madison University College Republicans in Harrisonburg.

Tuesday found him in the SWAC area where he met with Waynesboro News Virginian reporter Bob Stuart to discuss his campaign for U.S. Senate at the local Starbucks. Governor Gilmore is traveling the state visiting with folks to discover the issues they are concerned about ... and those include the economy, energy, and Iraq.

Gov. Warner unsure of where he sent VA Nat'l Guard?

This story hits close to home for those of us who live here in the home of the "Stonewall Brigade" ... the 116th Infantry that is currently deployed to Iraq and heading home in February.

Alexandria resident Mark Seavey, formerly of the Stonewall Brigade, was quoted in today's Mailbag in the Washington Times:
"I noted with a wry chuckle your discussion of [Virginia Senate candidate] Mark Warner's fundraising mailer, which admonished President Bush for the 'mismanaged war in Iraq' and the need for a 'responsible plan to bring our troops home.'

"In 2004, I was activated with 500 other Virginia National Guardsmen to deploy as part of the global war on terror. Around Christmastime, we received a letter from then-Governor Warner noting the difficulties in being away from our families and thanking us for our service in Iraq.

"One problem: We were serving in Afghanistan.

"Should a 'responsible plan' ever come into existence, I hope for the sake of my brothers and sisters in arms currently deployed that someone with a significantly less anemic attention to detail than our would-be senator is in charge of the travel arrangements."

Virginia Democrats Truly Respect Our 2nd Amendment Rights

Virginia Senate Majority Leader, Richard Saslaw (D-Fairfax) gave Virginians a hint as to how the Democrat elite feels about those of us who hold our constitutional rights dear. Saslaw suffered his first legislative defeat when he was unable to ram through Gov. Tim Kaine's bill to restrict gun rights in the Commonwealth.

On the morning of the the committee hearing he was heard in an elevator to say:
"I see we're debating the gun bill. Half the cast of 'Deliverance' is in town."
It's pretty simple. Democrats want to take away our gun rights. They realize that they have to pander to honest, gun owning Virginians in order to keep their seats of office. But when they think that no one is listening, their true views come out.

I'm quite confident that Kaine, and Senate candidate Mark Warner feel the same way as Saslaw. Warner just won't tip his hand until after the November election.

Warner or Gilmore? Tax and Spend ... or Not

The choice in Virginia's next Senator is pretty clear. Do we want someone who's admitted philosophy is to tax the citizens and spend their money? Or do we want a Senator who will help to slow down the Federal Fiscal Express; which is on a collision that we simply cannot afford.

Mark Warner is so proud of his record of increasing taxes and spending while Governor of Virginia that he doesn't make much of an attempt to hide it on his own website. Sure he uses euphemisms like "investment" when talking about spending the hard earned money of Virginians, but he seems convinced that the good people of the Commonwealth want their state and federal governments to raise their taxes and spend more of their money.

Jim Gilmore, on the other hand, understands that the money government spends rightfully belongs to its citizens. Jim Gilmore knows that "lower taxes promote economic vitality". Jim Gilmore's record as Attorney General and as Governor is one of putting Virginians first, and delivering vital services with the greatest bang for the buck.

Gilmore Nets More Major Support

January 24, 2008

JOHN VAN HOY JOINS JIM GILMORE FOR SENATE TEAM
Fredericksburg Businessman To Serve As Stafford County Campaign Chairman

Alexandria - Fredericksburg Businessman John Van Hoy has joined the Jim Gilmore for Senate Campaign and will serve as the Jim Gilmore Senate Campaign Chairman for Stafford County.

"John's business savvy and well regarded values and community activism are key elements that will help our campaign on the road to victory in November," said Gilmore in announcing Van Hoy's addition to the Gilmore team.

A long time member of the Republican State Central Committee and former Chairman of the Stafford County GOP, Van Hoy, a local businessman and geologist, has served on a variety of community boards at the state and local level, as well as business and trade association boards.

"It is my opinion we should start with what our working families and businesses can afford, rather than what the leadership thinks government needs and how to pay for it. This way of putting the leadership and governments wants before those of the people is the way of Democrats like Mark Warner, who put themselves first."

"I am proud supporter of Governor Jim Gilmore's candidacy for the United States Senate. As a U.S. Senator for Virginia, Jim Gilmore will carry forth his proven determination of reducing the size of government and the goal of keeping as much of working families' hard earned money in their hands. We are taxed too heavily everywhere we turn and Jim Gilmore knows that. We know that whether we had a surplus or were in a recession, Mark Warner raised our taxes and if elected Senator will do so again."

Cross posted at the Journal of Civilized Man.

Programs Galore, or Controlled Spending?

Warner is apparently realizing that he needs to talk about something on his website. So, he has added a "record" section. Those pages can be summed up thusly: "I saw some deficiency, so I created a new [program / committee / task force / agency / board / project / partnership / strike force / study / initiative ] and threw money at it." Taxpayer money. I wonder how many of those things are still in existence today, whether they are needed or not, and being funded by our tax dollars. Not that all politicians don't do some of that. But, to quote Giuliani,
"The Democrats believe in government when they have a choice. Republicans believe in people when we have a choice. . . . The Republican Party is the party of the people. The Democratic Party is the party of the government."

Now compare and contrast with Jim Gilmore, who would rather control spending and make tax cuts for families, so they can spend their own money the way they want. Now who do you want in Washington, dealing with our Federal budget? The guy who lives to create programs of every description to spend your tax dollars, or the guy who remembers where taxes come from and would try to spend them much more carefully?

Jim Gilmore: Against tax increases and for controlled spending

Jim Gilmore continues to be for the little guy by reiterating his long-held view of controlled government spending and no more tax increases.

At a time when there is concern about the direction of the economy, former Governor Gilmore expressed his concern with the state of the economy in Virginia and the nation:

"Lower taxes promote economic vitality. They help preserve strong incentives for growth and job creations. My record is solid and distinguished by a principled, determination to keep more of taxpayers' money in their own pockets. Unlike that of my opponent Mark Warner, whose legacy as governor is one of tax and spend and tax again," stated Gilmore.

"Democrats, like Mark Warner have the wrong economic solutions. Raising taxes on already over taxed working families in order to pay for even bigger government is the wrong thing to do. We need to work towards preserving our dynamic economy and address both short term and long term solutions that are in the best interest of our families, our children and our future. A sustainable fiscal policy which includes controlled spending and permanent tax cuts to working families is the way to get our economy on the move again."
A fiscal conservative, Jim Gilmore is the person we need to represent us in the U.S. Senate.

Young Virginia Leaders Continue To Join The Jim Gilmore For Senate Team

Alexandria -- Chris Darden, 32, Chairman of the Waynesboro Republican Party recently announced his endorsement of Jim Gilmore for Senate on the Virginia website SixtyFour81.com, a Greater Central Shenandoah Valley area Republican news outlet.

Calling former Governor Gilmore an "honorable, principled and conservative leader", Chairman Darden went on to say, "I, like countless others, identify with the story of the man [Gilmore] who came from an extremely humble environment and has gone on to make many contributions in the public service throughout his career".

"He [Gilmore, as Governor] returned millions in revenue back to the localities, he lowered tuition rates for students, supported and passed the ban on partial birth abortion, and led our state during the attacks on September 11th. He has also helped lead the way on counter-terrorism during the War on Terror," emphasized Chairman Darden in his endorsement announcement. "These contributions are invaluable to our towns, our State and our Nation."

Gilmore made MLK, Jr. Holiday Happen in Virginia

As pointed out by Bill Hobbs, Virginia used to have a combined Lee-King-Jackson Day. Governor Jim Gilmore made it a stand-alone holiday, so Virginia would honor Dr. King's legacy. Dr. King inspired so many millions and really did bring about positive change to the entire country through his speaking, writing, and leading.

Thanks to Jim Gilmore for stepping up while Governor and making this appropriate holiday celebration happen in Virginia.

Martin Luther King Jr Day

MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. DAY

WHEREAS, the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was born in Atlanta, Georgia on January 15, 1929, was ordained minister at the age of 19, and rose to national prominence as a leader of the American Civil Rights Movement in the 1950s and 1960s; and

WHEREAS, Dr. King, in true Jeffersonian fashion, embraced the vision of an America where, "We hold these truths to be self evident, that all men are created equal…", and a nation whose citizens judge one another "not by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character"; and

WHEREAS, Dr. King’s leadership, will, and compassion at civil rights protests throughout our nation inspired millions to believe in his dream for an America in which all her countrymen are treated equally and justly; and

WHEREAS, Dr. King was a peaceful and loving man, preaching nonviolence to his followers, both black and white, as they rallied around him time after time, peacefully assembled in "a beautiful symphony of brotherhood" representative of his dream which we continue to strive for in our homes, our communities, and in our great Commonwealth; and

WHEREAS, people everywhere continue to look to Dr. King’s example as a model in human relations, and his role in the struggle for civil human rights has persisted since his assassination in 1968 and will continue until his vision of universal freedom, equality, and justice is finally realized;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, James S. Gilmore, III, do hereby recognize January 15, 2001 as MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. DAY in the COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens

Jim Gilmore on Lee and Jackson

Tomorrow, Monday, is the original Lee - Jackson Day. With the celebration now being observed on Friday, a battle has been waging on the legitimacy of this sacred Virginia Holiday.

One thing Virginians like the most of their elected officials is a backbone. The more tempered the steel--the better. That is why Virginians flourished and thrived under the leadership of Jim Gilmore. He stood for something and as a result, fell for nothing. Of course, he held (and holds) strong on his belief in our second amendment rights, keeping taxes low, promoting pro-family values and supporting our military.

But more than that, he knew that the history of our Commonwealth was just as important as our present and future. If we cannot celebrate and hold fast to our history and traditions, we are doomed. Jim Gilmore recognized that and stood up in support of men like Lee and Jackson and the cause in which they believed in, fought for, and in Jackson's case--died for. He stood up for the farmers who left their plows, the students who left their books and classrooms, the laborers who walked away from their chores, the bank tellers who closed their windows, and the priests who stepped down from their pulpits. He stood up for those men who fought together, bled together, and suffered and died together--all for a cause they cared so deeply for.

And with that steadfastness, he issued this proclamation as governor:

CERTIFICATE of RECOGNITION

By virtue of the authority vested by the Constitution in the Governor of the
Commonwealth of Virginia, there is hereby officially recognized:
Confederate History Month

WHEREAS, it was during the month of April that the people of the Confederate States of America began at Fort Sumter, South Carolina and ended at Appomattox, Virginia a four-year tragic, heroic and determined struggle for deeply held beliefs; and

WHEREAS, Virginia has long recognized her Confederate history, the officers and enlisted men of the Army and the Navy and those at home who made sacrifices on behalf of their families, homes, communities, Virginia and country; and that it is just and right to do so; and

WHEREAS, the noble spirit and inspiring leadership of great Confederate Generals, leaders, and the ordinary men and women, free and not free, of the Confederate States is an integral part of the history of all of America; and

WHEREAS, upon the conclusion of the war, many of these same leaders and citizens worked tirelessly to reunite and rebuild this country and forge reconciliation; and

WHEREAS, our recognition of Confederate history also recognizes that slavery was one of the causes of the war; and

WHEREAS, slavery was a practice that deprived African-Americans of their God-given inalienable rights, which degraded the human spirit, is abhorred and condemned by Virginians, and was ended by this war; and

WHEREAS, the numerous battlefields, monuments, museums and other historical sites to be found in Virginia allow our citizens, and indeed people from all over the world, to remember, study and appreciate the men and women of that unique time in the history of our Commonwealth and nation; and

WHEREAS, Virginia is proud and pleased to recognize and celebrate all those who fought and sacrificed in this great struggle that divided families, the nation, and our Commonwealth; and

WHEREAS, the knowledge of the role of the Confederate States of America in the history of our nation and our Commonwealth is vital to understanding who we are and what we are; and

WHEREAS, we honor our past and from it draw the courage, strength and wisdom to reconcile ourselves, and go forward into the future together as Virginians and Americans,

NOW, THEREFORE, I, James S. Gilmore, III, Governor, do hereby recognize April 1998 as Confederate History Month in the Commonwealth of Virginia, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.

Jim Gilmore is a true Virginian. This is just ANOTHER reason why he will serve us well in the Senate.

Why Jim Gilmore Will Win Part 5a

Bringing Virginians Together

By virtue of the authority vested by the Constitution in the Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia, there is hereby officially recognized:

IN HONOR OF GENERAL ROBERT E. LEE
WHEREAS, General Robert Edward Lee was born on January 19, 1807 at Stratford Hall Plantation, the son of "Light Horse Harry" Lee and Ann Carter Lee; and

WHEREAS, Robert E. Lee graduated second in his class from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1829 and thereafter enjoyed a distinguished career in the United States Army, exhibiting superior courage, leadership, and tact on the battlefield and as an administrator before resigning from the United States Army April 20, 1861, just three days after the Commonwealth of Virginia's secession from the Union; and

WHEREAS, Robert E. Lee returned to his beloved Old Dominion April 23, 1861 and served for a year as Commander in Chief of Virginia's military forces before returning to the field as Commander of the Army of Northern Virginia, the post in which he distinguished himself as one of history's greatest military strategists and one of its most beloved generals; and

WHEREAS, soon after his April 9, 1865 surrender at Appomattox Courthouse ended the most difficult and divisive period in our nation's history, Robert E. Lee dedicated the remainder of his life to reforming higher education in the South by serving as the eighth President of Washington College, now Washington & Lee University, in Lexington, Virginia, where he greatly expanded the school's curriculum, increased financial resources, and created an academic atmosphere conducive to reconciliation among young men of Southern and Northern heritage; and

WHEREAS, Robert E. Lee's name evokes thoughts of concepts such as integrity, gallantry, humility, and honor, and he will always be remembered as one of Virginia's finest gentlemen;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, James S. Gilmore, III, do hereby recognize January 12, 2001 as LEE-JACKSON DAY in the COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.

IN HONOR OF
GENERAL THOMAS "STONEWALL" JACKSON

WHEREAS, General Thomas Jonathan "Stonewall" Jackson was born January 21, 1824, in Clarksburg, Virginia, now located in the state of West Virginia; and

WHEREAS, General Jackson began his military career at the United States Military Academy at West Point and continued it in the United States Army until he retired in 1852 after teaching his first year of philosophy and military tactics as a professor at the Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, Virginia; and

WHEREAS, General Jackson left VMI in 1861 to join the Confederate Army and fight for his native Virginia at the outbreak of the Civil War, was quickly promoted from the rank of colonel to the position of brigadier general, and earned his nickname at the First Battle of Bull Run where, according to the South’s Brigadier General Barnard E. Bee, Jackson stood "like a stone wall" against the Union’s advancing troops until Confederate reinforcements arrived; and

WHEREAS, General Jackson’s valor and brilliant stratagems inspired his troops to repeated victories against Union forces that often sizably outnumbered his own, culminating in the Battle of Chancellorsville where, despite being fatally wounded on the second day of fighting, Jackson’s "Stonewall Brigade" teamed with General Robert E. Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia to defeat the opposition once again; and

WHEREAS, General Jackson’s military genius and rare ability to motivate men made him a hero of his time and a Virginian icon for all ages;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, James S. Gilmore, III, do hereby recognize January 12, 2001 as LEE—JACKSON DAY in the COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.

Why Jim Gilmore Will Win Part 5

Bringing Virginians Together

The wise leadership of Gov. Jim Gilmore sought to bring all Virginians together during times when some politicians & political activists only sought to move us apart along lines of race, creed, religion or heritage. My previous post highlighted Gov. Gilmore's historic, first in the nation, Declaration of a separate state holiday for Martin Luther King Jr.

This is Jesse Jackson Jr's take on Gov. Gilmore's leadership on the issue:

"Gilmore has proven adept at stealing Democrats' issues and throwing the opposing party off balance. Transportation had been viewed as a Democratic issue--until the governor came up with his own plan to spend $2.5 billion over six years. Same with scrapping the food tax, which Gilmore adopted as his own.

The governor's efforts to reach out to the black community are earning him praise from civil rights leaders who have long been critical of Virginia's Republicans."

Jesse Jackson Jr. continues:

"Gilmore proposed the King holiday after consulting with former governor L. Douglas Wilder (D), the nation's first elected black governor. As a legislator from Richmond in the 1970s and 1980s, Wilder worked hard to secure passage of a stand-alone holiday for King, but by 1984 had to settle for a Lee-Jackson-King day on the third Monday in January, which became the federal King holiday as well. "Some people believe it's a sop," to lump all three historical figures into one holiday, Wilder said. "It's offensive to all."

"The Gilmore-Wilder alliance may seem unusual, but it pays practical dividends for both politicians. For Gilmore, the friendship with Wilder helps develop his record as an inclusive governor. Gilmore has helped an impoverished black town on the Eastern Shore, offered significant financial aid to two historically black colleges and proposed measures to close the "digital divide" between rich and poor Internet customers."

"Gilmore has just penned a state budget that includes $1 million for a national slavery museum in Jamestown, a pet project of Wilder, the grandson of slaves. The Gilmore connection also allows Wilder, elected in 1989 during the heyday of Virginia Democrats, to gig activists in what he now regards as a moribund party. "

Leadership involves building coalitions and bringing 'warring' factions together, exactly how many Chief Executives of Virginia can claim success on issues that were this divisive in our Commonwealth?

No wonder "Gov. Jim Gilmore will Eat into the Democrat Base". Gov. Gilmore has credibility with Virginians of African Heritage, which obviously was a another factor working against Sen. George Allen in 2006. Just another reason why Gov. Jim Gilmore will win the Senate Seat being vacated by Senator John Warner this November.

Will Mark Warner Flip, or Flop?

Former Gov. Virginia Mark Warner seems incapable of maintaining a position when it comes to illegal immigration. Last Friday Warner stated that he would have supported the McCain-Kennedy amnesty bill had he been in Congress. During the same appearance, he called for more enforcement at the border and stronger employer sanctions.

Of course history has proven that granting amnesty negates enforcement. Even Mark Warner can't have it both ways.

We can only guess what position Warner will take on his successor's attempts to restrict the 2nd amendment rights of Virginians. Of course we shouldn't worry too much. He can always change his position the next day. It will simply depend on the audience at that particular moment.

Next we'll be hearing press accounts that Warner never increased taxes as Governor.

Washington Times: "Gilmore shoots down gun-show control talk"

"Gilmore Shoots Down Gun-Show Control Talk" writes Seth McLaughlin at the Washington Times on Jim Gilmore's disagreement with Governor Tim Kaine about "closing" the gun show "loophole." He writes:
Former Gov. Jim Gilmore, a Republican, sent a letter to Republican leaders yesterday in which he criticized Gov. Tim Kaine's push to close the so-called gun show loophole.
Kaine addressed the issue in his State of the State Address last week, stirring up gun activists who disagree with the governor:
Since the speech, gun-rights activists have accused Mr. Kaine of distorting the Virginia Tech tragedy, where 32 students and faculty where killed by a student with mental illness, to make it seem as if the "loophole" had something to do with the massacre. They say and Mr. Kaine agrees that the law would not have stopped the gunman from buying the guns he used in the massacre.
...
In his letter to Speaker Howell, Gilmore points to a 2001 study by the Bureau of Justice Statistics found that less than one percent of guns used in crimes have come from gun shows.

Gilmore speaks out about Kaine's gun show restrictions

Jim Gilmore has expressed concern with Governor Tim Kaine's proposal to force private citizens to perform background checks when selling at gun shows. Today he sent a letter to Speaker Bill Howell at the House of Delegates:

I wish to express my serious concerns with Governor Kaine's proposal to force private individuals to perform background checks when selling at gun shows. This proposal would abridge the rights of private collectors while distorting the intent of the law.

There is no "loophole" that applies to gun shows. Federal and state law applies to gun shows in exactly the same manner as anywhere else. The vast majority of sellers at gun shows are federally licensed dealers who are required under current law to perform instant background checks on their customers. The remainders are private sellers who are not required in any setting - gun show or otherwise - to submit to the same regulations that apply to licensed dealers.

There is absolutely no evidence to suggest that bringing the heavy hand of gun control down on private sellers (who are usually collectors who buy, sell or trade a very small quantity of guns) will do anything to reduce violent crime. A 2001 study by the Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) found that less than one percent of guns used in crimes have come from gun shows. Numerous other studies by the Department of Justice and academia have revealed similar findings.

It is clear that subjecting private collectors to more gun control regulations would do nothing to reduce violent crime, while setting a dangerous precedent that all private firearms transactions would be subject to regulations that were intended to apply only to licensed dealers, not private individuals. Our attention would be better focused on enforcing current laws, and ensuring that law abiding citizens are not treated as criminals.
Jim Gilmore joins other Republicans who have expressed concern with the Governor's proposed changes in the law.

Gilmore Speaks Out About Kaine's Gun Show Restrictions

Opposing the Heavy Hand of Gun Control on Private Citizens

Alexandria -- Expressing his grave concern with Governor Kaine's proposal to force private citizens to perform background checks when selling at gun shows, Governor Jim Gilmore sent a letter today to Speaker Bill Howell, at the Virginia House of Delegates.
Text of letter follows:

Indeed. Gilmore is solid on our right to bear arms.

It's Time for Jim Gilmore.

Having stayed silent on this issue long enough, it is time for me to throw out my support for the candidate I believe will best serve our Commonwealth as the next United States Senator. I think that honor should fall on the more-than-capable Jim Gilmore.

We in the Valley do not take our politics or our political affiliations lightly. We come from a tradition, firmly planted and instilled by the great Ronald Reagan of such unshakable tenets as protecting our second amendment rights, protecting the life of the unborn, keeping taxes low, promoting pro-family values, and supporting our military. We don't want to support a candidate who waffles and gives yes, no, and/or maybe answers to the toughest of questions. We have lived under just that exact bowl of mush that politicians like Mark Warner have been feeding us for far too long. It's time for a change. It's time to bring Virginia back to true conservatism. It's time for Jim Gilmore.

The Commonwealth is facing many tough decisions and issues right now--mainly: illegal immigration, taxes, transportation, and homeland security. Jim Gilmore has the answers to those persistent questions that have been plaguing our Commonwealth.

  • Gilmore understands that the illegals are costing taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars every year. American and Virginian borders must be tightened up immediately and a crackdown on employers who hire illegal immigrants must be enforced ten-fold. This issue hits very close to home as some downtown restaurant businesses hire just those people.
  • Jim Gilmore has experience with what it means to keep taxes low. As governor, he cut 16 different taxes totaling $1.5 billion, created more than 250,000 new jobs and gave the state its lowest unemployment in 40 years. That's what you call an accomplishment, folks.
  • We see construction all around us it seems...and it never seems to be progressing. Under Jim Gilmore, we will begin to see the light at the end of that tunnel. Gilmore's record as Governor for advancing key transportation projects speak for itself. And it doesn't stop there--he's bringing new, fresh ideas to the table like helping to protect the Virginia taxpayer by using federal transportation bonds and private/public partnerships to raise the funds to build effect transportation projects.
  • Homeland security is an issue very close and personal to Jim Gilmore. He led our state through the disastrous and turbulent times of September 11, 2001. He has first hand experience of what evil is. And he will not let it come to Virginia ever again. Not only a distinguished veteran, he also chaired the congressionally appointed Gilmore Commission which warned in 1999 and 2000 that a terrorist attack on America was eminent and that a national plan of response was not in place. After the attacks on September 11th, Congress adopted 146 of our 164 recommendations on national security.
Jim Gilmore has these solid principles and virtues at the forefront of not only his personal, but his political life as well: family, patriotism, justice, free enterprise, defense of our nation. I join him and many others, in subscribing to those tenets.

I am proud to say that I am not only fully supporting Jim Gilmore for Senate in 2008 but that I am also the coordinator for his election bid in the City of Staunton.

Lingamfelter endorses Jim Gilmore

The Jim Gilmore for Senate campaign continues to build momentum with today's announcement that Delegate Scott Lingamfelter (R-31st District) has endorsed Jim Gilmore for the U.S. Senate and will serve as his campaign chairman for Prince William County.

The Gilmore for Senate press release gave details:

DELEGATE LINGAMFELTER JOINS JIM GILMORE FOR SENATE TEAM

To Serve as Prince William County Campaign Chairman

Alexandria -- Virginia House Del. L. Scott Lingamfelter (R-31st District), whose delegate seat represents parts of both Prince William and Fauquier Counties, has joined the Jim Gilmore for Senate Campaign and will serve as the Jim Gilmore Senate Campaign Chairman for Prince William County.

“Scott Lingamfelter has limitless energy for the political process and we want that energy working for us,” said Gilmore in announcing Lingamfelter’s addition to the Gilmore team.

An Army veteran of 28 years and retired Army Colonel, Lingamfelter has been a member of the Virginia House since 2002. Del. Lingamfelter is a voice for both social and fiscal conservatism in the General Assembly, and has distinguished himself as a clear-headed spokesman for low taxes, education reform, and public safety, including the right to keep and bear arms.
Gilmore supporters will continue to build the team preparing for the May 31st RPV Convention in Richmond.

More In Store from Jim Gilmore

In October the Washington Post practically bust their buttons crowing about a poll which showed former Virginia Gov. Mark Warner with a 30-point lead over both former Gov. Jim Gilmore and Rep. Tom Davis. This would be one more nail in the coffin of GOP, nationally and in the Commonwealth.

Well, it's January now. Ten months to go until the general election. Is Warner still ahead? Yep, but now the lead is down to 15%! As our colleague Chris at Mason Conservative notes, there's "Blood in the Water"!. The latest Rasmussen poll shows the spread at Warner - 53% to Gilmore - 38%.

There are myriad reasons why Jim Gilmore will be the Commonwealth's next senator. Not the least of which is Warner's seeming inability to maintain one stance on a given issue. Warner makes John Kerry look almost steadfast by comparison.

There is one area that cannot be overlooked - the African-American vote. Unlike certain states up north, you can't simply walk in and pull the Democrat lever. Virginians actually have to vote for each candidate.

While I am confident that Warner will garner a huge share of votes from African-Americans in Virginia, every vote will count in this election and sizable numbers of African-Americans have proven that they will vote for the right Republican candidate. While I was unable to find any exit poll numbers from Gilmore's 1997 election, I do remember that George Allen polled surprisingly well from African-Americans in his 1993 race for Governor.

Let us remember a few things from Gilmore's 1993 race for AG as well as his 1997 gubernatorial run. Jim is a tireless campaigner and impressive on the stump. He is a man of humble beginnings and that background shows through, and well, with working class voters.

Jim Gilmore signed into law Virginia's first stand-alone Martin Luther King holiday. Gov. Gilmore hosted Mrs. Coretta Scott King at the Governor's Mansion and under his leadership Virginia entered into a technology partnership with the King Center for Nonviolence.

These are just a few issues that are unique to African-Americans. But lest we forget the issues that impact all Virginians - crime, taxes, fiscal discipline, education. Jim Gilmore has shown his strength and leadership with these issues in the past and will continue to do so in the U.S. Senate.

Given the strength of Gilmore's past Virginia campaigns I do not expect that this sizable segment of the Virginia electorate will be ignored, and I am confident that a large number of them will respond with their votes in November.

Jim Gilmore - A Biography

This video will give you some background on Jim Gilmore. His Political and Military experience is covered. Most interesting is the Gilmore Commission. The commission said the USA was vulnerable before 9/11, and the government enacted many of the commissions recommendations after the attack.

Blood In The Water: Warner Only At 53%

8Rasmussen just did a poll for the yet-to-be-started Virginia Senate race, and Mark Warner, oh ye-of-70% approval, has a 15 point lead on Jim Gilmore. Not too bad, consideirng people were saying Warner was up by 30 points a few months ago. More interestingly, is that Warner is only at 53%, which means there are plenty of voters out there for Gilmore to go out and win. With the weak showing of Hillary Clinton in Virginia, and I believe she will be the nominee, Gilmore has all the oppurtunity to make this into a real fight. Don't get me wrong, I wish my guy was up by 15, but my guy WAS up by 15 last go around and we know what happened there.

I'm writing a little more here than I did on my blog. What this shows is that, even before this race starts, is that Virginians aren't sure about Mark Warner. The number that Democrats continually throw in our faces is that Mark Warner had a 70% approval rating when he left office, and its that number that is given the Dems the sense of superiority in this race. Also, its was believed that Warner was up by 30 points before this. What Jim Gilmore needs to do, and what George Allen did not do, was focus on specific issues and forcing Mark Warner to answer them. Gilmore needs to be on the offensive at all times, and pound Warner into the ground. Nothing is more representative of Mark Warner than his campaign homepage, which is a self-serving blog that is completely devoid of issues. There is no page on specific issues and where Gov. Warner stands on them. Nothing on taxes (though I bet I know where he stands there), Iraq, health care, education, et al. Its telling, because that is the campaign Mark Warner wants to run . . . coasting through Virginia, flashing his toothy grin and laying claim to everything good that has happened in this Commonwealth since Jefferson. But in this hyper-political season, with a wide-open Presidential race, Warner won't be able to stay quite long, and its clear with these polling numbers that Jim Gilmore will have the oppurtunity to lay into Warner's record and lack of vision or explaination as to what he will do in the US Senate.

We know what kind of US Senator Gilmore will make . . . on that is a true conservative who will fight for low taxes, victory in Iraq, and free enterprise.

Why Jim Gilmore Will Win Part 4

Military Service - National Security

Serving in our military has almost been a prerequisite for every senator elected to a US Senate Seat during the last forty years Virginia history.

Only three of eight senators during that time were non-veterans, (R) William L. Scott 73-79, (R) Paul Trible Jr 83-89, and (R) George Allen 2001-2007.

Three of the Five veterans elected were US Marines, (R) John Warner 1979 - 2007, (also served in Navy), (D) Chuck Robb, 1989-2001, and (D) Jim Webb, 2006- present.

(D)Harry Floyd Byrd, Jr 1965-1983 was a navy veteran, and (D) William Sprong, 1966- 1973, Army-Air Corps.

As a personal note to how strongly I feel about the issue, one of the two Democrats I have voted for in my life was Senator Robb in 1988. I had just gotten out of the USMC, and while serving in Okinawa Japan; I spoke with a Gunnery Sgt, and Master Sgt, who served with Sen. Robb in Vietnam.

Both Leathernecks spoke highly of the Senator as an outstanding Marine officer, who would take his radio man to the front of the column when patrolling and leading attacks. That political support ended in 1994, as I supported another Marine Officer, Oliver North.

Only one of the three candidates for US Senate this year are veterans. I am proud to say that candidate is Gov. Jim Gilmore. As Kilo points out here in another B4G posts:

"This is one reason I am supporting Jim Gilmore. In my opinion his national security experience is far above the other candidates. Gilmore has a impressive military background in Army Intelligence.
Jim Gilmore volunteered for the U.S. Army and won honors after completing training at the Army Intelligence School and Defense Language Institute. He was then assigned to the 650th Military Intelligence Group. Serving in Germany during the Vietnam War and fluent in German, Jim Gilmore played an important role in counter-intelligence work safeguarding the security of American bases in Europe. He is the recipient of the Joint Services Commendation Medal for his service to NATO.(
LINK) "

A distinct advantage that Gov. Jim Gilmore has in this election will be the ability to walk into any VFW, American Legion Post, Marine Corps, or Navy League Meeting Hall, and know that he belongs there. Virginia has many active duty, reserve, National Guard and retired Veterans that the Governor can appeal to on a personal level.

There is no better authority to vote on important matters such as defense spending, base realignments, veterans benefits, etc. than to be a veteran your self.

Gov. Warner can only offer up that he will defer to Senator Jim Webb on Military matters. What else does he have to say, he was selling cell phones, while Gov. Jim Gilmore was serving his nation?

Governor Jim Gilmore, Thank You For Your Service!

I concur. If we have bombs dropping on our heads or terrorists blowing up our malls, nothing else will matter. We will fighting for our very survival ... terrorists want to kill us. Period.

Jim Gilmore has security experience, he led the Commonwealth through the dark days of 9/11, and it is comforting to know he has military background in Army intelligence.

Why Jim Gilmore Will Win Part 3

AGENT OF CHANGE

According to every electron heading my way from the boob tube, the electorate is restless and the rising candidacies of Huckabee and Obama is due to the voters desire for change. I don't doubt Gov. Mark Warner is also going to try and make that connection.... That he is an 'Agent of Change'....

Have you quit laughing yet? Seriously, Gov. Mark Warner an Agent of Change. The only thing he possibly changed while he was Governor was the color of the drapes in the Mansion; and well Ok, I will concede he changed some tax rates to higher levels.

When a governor gets elected and goes to Richmond to implement their campaign promises, they always run into one big problem. The System that the Founding Fathers set up to slow changes in the governmental process. You know the old Executive checked by the Legislative branch of Government. The 140 elected representatives of the House of Delegates and Senate, that make up our General Assembly.

This system has stymied many a Governor before, until Gov. Jim Gilmore formulated a plan to deliver on a campaign pledge to eliminate the Car Tax; by merely transferring excess state income tax revenues back to the localities, and lift that burden from the people. He even took it a step further by reducing in-state college tuition 20%, and freezing it at that level for four years. That is change citizens can feel in their wallets, and see on reduced student loan statements.

However, this approach to government finance doesn't sit well with the bureaucrats and politicians who screamed at the top of their lungs:
"It's not fair! "You have ruined our Santa Claus routine for pandering to the interests, and their bevy of lobbyists who come to see us every year", they cried.

Fellow Republicans, it doesn't stop at taxes, Gov. Jim Gilmore also made reforms at VDOT a priority. He created for the first time an executive level Inspector General position to focus resources, ensure proper finance, audit, and compliance controls throughout VDOT. What does that mean? Someone is responsible, and it helps put to an end to the finger pointing when this is not done, or that has gone over budget.

Well he must have short changed Education right, with all that extra revenue being sent back to the localities and the people? How could he roll back tuition 20% at our colleges, and freeze it at that level for four years? He must have short changed education?

The answer is no, Gov. Gilmore's administration oversaw the largest increase in K-12 education spending to that date, along with the largest increase in transportation spending in history. More on both of those in later posts.

The point here my fellow Citizens is that Gov. Jim Gilmore is only disliked by those whose 'business as usual' process he completely turned on it's head. This is a major distinction between him and Gov. Warner, whose election must have elicited a chorus of shouts of joy from the lobbyists, bureaucrats, and Fat Cat politicians of:

"The Party is on again Boys, come on in, the Water feels Fine!"

Which candidate for US Senate is going to be able to claim that they are an Agent of Change? Gov. Jim Gilmore, who delivered a massive reversion of the citizens money actually back to the citizens; or Gov. Warner, the changer of drapes, and the guy who safely returned Richmond back to it's 'Business as Usual" status.

The Republican who is going to help us take back the US Senate from the Democrats, or the guy who will just add to the Democratic majority in the US Senate? Do you think the change that Virginians will be voting for is one of higher taxes, and universal health care?

I mean seriously, Gov. Mark Warner as an Agent of Change? This is a guy who became a multi-millionaire from 'political connections' to obtain the rights to radio frequencies needed to create a fortune in the cell phone business. Here is a great quote Gov. Warner can use to prove he is an Agent of Change:

"I Majored In Washington, DC"

The only likely change to come from him going back to Congress is his status from multi-millionaire to billionaire.

The citizens of Virginia can not have a clearer choice for US Senate this year if they are looking for change. Gov. Jim Gilmore has a clear record of being an Agent of Change, while Gov. Mark Warner has a clear record of business as usual.

Why Gov. Gilmore Will Win - Part 2

Two words.... 'Looming Recession'... yes you may have heard about this on Bloomberg News:

``Since 1949 the unemployment rate has never risen by this magnitude without the economy being in recession,'' John Ryding, chief U.S. economist at Bear Stearns Cos. in New York, said in a note to clients. ``We now put ourselves on recession watch.''

The economy is always on the minds of the voters, and come this November when we are heading to the polls the Republican candidates should be making the argument that they can best handle the economy. Even the average citizen knows enough about economics to make the connection that you do not raise taxes heading into a recession.

Who is the best candidate for US Senate to be making that argument here in Virginia? Gov. Jim Gilmore is the candidate with the best track record of delivering actual and sustained tax cuts to Virginia's Citizens!

We just highlighted the Higher Education Tuition Rollback of 20%, and four year subsequent freezing of tuition, and following that with the successful 'Car Tax' cuts initiated and championed by Gov. Gilmore.

The voters of Virginia will be looking more closely at their wallets and pocketbooks in November, just as they were in 1997 when Gilmore 'steamrolled' LG Don Beyer in his own home territory of Northern Virginia. Northern Virginia loves their big homes, and their cars and my gut feeling is they want to keep them, and not let the bank repossess them.

Gov. Gilmore is going to look across that stage in the debate with Gov. Mark Warner and say what to him? How about:

"My administration used excess tax revenues and delivered a reduction in the cost of tuition so many more can achieve the goal of higher education, and my esteemed opponent......"

"My Administration used excess tax revenues to roll back the taxes on cars in Virginia, while my opponent not only promised never to raise taxes during his campaign, he promised you the voters, he would finish eliminating the Car Tax in his first or second year as Governor".

Gov. Jim Gilmore is the Candidate to make the connection, that in the good economic times you don't increase the size of government spending you return those taxes to the people in a meaningful and constructive way to help those very taxpayers!

Gov. Mark Warner has President Bush's 2001 tax cuts and Gov. Gilmore's tax cuts to thank for his ability to spend, and spend, and spend some more......

2000Fiscal year $21,368,967,256
2001 Fiscal year $23,322,749,017
2002 Fiscal year $23,483,212,825
2003 Fiscal year $24,982,910,876
2004 Fiscal year $26,379,372,090
2005 Fiscal year $29,257,674,193

2006 Fiscal year $31,991,449,302

Let's get for real fellow Republicans.... Gov. Warner would much rather have any lessor known candidate opposite of him in this coming election and subsequent debates than Gov. Jim Gilmore.

Why Gov Gilmore Will Win Part 1

My Good Friend DJ has done some posts, here, and here with his opinion on why Gov. Jim Gilmore can not win the up coming US Senate seat being vacated by the retiring Sen. John Warner. My rebuttals to them can be found in the comments sections on DJ's posts.

He has four main points, Govt. Spending, The War on Terror, (specifically in Iraq), Right To Life, and Taxes. I plan to tackle each one of these issues in subsequent posts. This post however, zeroes in on an issue near and dear to a lot of people. The cost of Higher Education.

This subject is also going to tie into another of DJ's posts that Del. Marshall would do better in Northern Virginia than Gov. Gilmore; we're going to dispel that notion, as these posts unfold.

Gov. Jim Gilmore is best known for his signature 'Car Tax Cut', formally known as the PPTRA, or Personal Property Tax Relief Act. This program was designed to divert excess General Fund Revenues to localities and reimburse them for the personal property tax on each individual taxpayers automobile's first $20,000 in value.
Little remembered however, and just as effective was Gov. Gilmore's plan to make Higher Education more affordable for Virginian's Also. I like this quote from the Gov. I found:

"A high quality education is of little value to people if access is denied because the degree is too expensive."

Gov. Gilmore's first act as Governor was to form a 'Blue Ribbon Commission on Higher Education in Virginia. This commission reported back and outlined three goals:
  • Raising the quality of academic and research programs at Virginia's public colleges and universities;

  • Keeping a college education affordable for students and their families; and

  • Ensuring accountability for the care and use of public resources.

further from the report:

"As you know, the commission's Interim Report, which I submitted to you in 1998, contained a comprehensive and unprecedented examination of 15 years of funding and spending in Virginia Higher Education. On the basis of the findings in the Interim Report, you recommended, and the General Assembly adopted, a 20% tuition roll back. Tied to the tuition reduction was the committment of sufficient general fund dollars to replace those revenues. As a result, a college education is more affordable today for Virginia Students and their parents."

Notice the similarities? Gov. Gilmore recognized that our economy was growing at a fantastic rate due to a booming economy resulting from the Republican take over in Congress in 1994. Under the Leadership of Republican House Speaker Newt Gingrich, Congress enacted and President Clinton signed legislation that lowered taxes, gave greater incentives for business large and small, reformed Federal Welfare programs, and restrained Federal Spending.

Another factor to this economic boom were the reforms along the same lines by the preceeding VA Republican Gov. Allen. He set the stage for Gov. Gilmore, and in a nutshell with Wall Street and the Virginia economy sending more and more revenue into the Commonwealth's coffers, the Governor had a choice. He could have sat back and said happy times, and gleefully signed into effect any and every spending bill sent to him by the VA General Assembly; or he could look to help the average citizens who sent the money in the first place.

Gov. Gilmore wisely took note of this and formulated a plan to do what? Let the Higher Education system just spend and spend as usual? No, He devised a plan to use these extra revenues to enhance Higher Education, while opening the door for more and more Virginians to afford to get a College Degree!

He simply laid the ground work, then executed a plan that saved those seeking a college degree thousands of dollars in up front tuition's costs, and possibly thousands of dollars in interest on student loans....

Just as his excellent plan of diverting this extra tax revenue back to localities to replace personal property taxes on cars, he diverted General Fund revenue to actually cut, by 20% existing college tuition across the board, and freeze it for four years!

How will this help Gov. Gilmore's electability in NOVA? Last time I checked a lot of college graduates live in NOVA, along with the parents of those kids they helped put through college. What about current college students, how did this help them? Well, obviously their tuition is lower now by 20% over what it could be before Gov. Warner's administration opened the flood gates for tuition increases again.

Oh, you say... Gov. Warner had to do it, because Gov. Gilmore left office with a the General Assembly facing a deficit. Really, how can there be a deficit when spending went up?

  • 2000Fiscal year $21,368,967,256
  • 2001 Fiscal year $23,322,749,017
  • 2002 Fiscal year $23,483,212,825

  • 2003 Fiscal year $24,982,910,876

  • 2004 Fiscal year $26,379,372,090

  • 2005 Fiscal year $29,257,674,193

Gov. Gilmore served from 1998 to 2002.

h/t DJ McGuire to budget links.
